About Me

I'm an Irish national living in the UK. I started out my data career in Astronomy, where I focussed on exo-planetary systems (i.e. planets around other stars). I have two Masters degrees in Astronomy, one from the University of Groningen, Netherlands, and one from the University of Warwick, UK. Observational Astronomy is a data-rich field, involving advanced statistics and data modelling, which fully prepared me for a career in Data Science. After university, I began my Data Science career in the water industry in the UK as the Senior Data Scientist, primarily building machine learning models to detect water leaks, developing software products for our clients, and progressing to Head of R&D and Data Analytics where I led a team of Data Scientists and Software Engineers to bring cutting edge ML products to the UK and international water industries. In 2023, I began working at Liberty Global Shared Services Centre as Data Science Manager, responsible for developing end-to-end technical solutions using GCP, educating the business on the capabilities of Data Science and ensuring Data was being appropriately leveraged. I then progressed to working as Data Science Manager at Asda in Leeds, UK where my team and I have been building Asda's very own safety stock optimisation tool, massively enhancing how Asda sets it's safety stock strategy. In well controlled trials, using an advanced synthetic control technique, this model demonstrated upwards of £23m in savings for Asda. Full roll out is currently underway and estimated to be worth £44m in waste savings and availability improvements. Most recently, I've moved into the Travel sector, working as Lead Data Scientist at Jet2.com where I am responsible for leading a team of Data Scientists to deliver impactful data products that enhance customer experience, contracting and drive business growth. Our most recent Data Science product launch aims to optimise how Jet2 procures and allocated hotel rooms for it's customers, leading to significant cost savings and improved customer satisfaction. This product is expected to save Jet2 in excess of £12m annually once fully rolled out. Now, having more than years experience in the industry, I am excited to continue driving innovation and delivering value through data science.

Projects

Below is a list of the various machine learning, data science and data visualisation project I've been working on.

Using ML to predict UK Winter severity

Using a variety of climate index data, I attempt to predict just how cold this winter will be in the UK with machine learning and statistics.

Weather I/O (Down for maintenance)

Weather I/O is a website I built in AWS to display UK rainfall accumulation data. Using open data from the UK Environment Agency, Weather I/O displays the geographic distribution of rainfall accumulation. After searching far and wide, I could not find any service that provided this data. So I decided to build it myself.

Customer Satisfaction Dashboard

Using data collected from Google Reviews, I examine the level of restaurant customer satisfaction across the UK using Tableau.

Forecasting UK Water Demand

Through a variety of techniques, I build a forecasting model to predict future water demand in the UK.

UK Used Car Price Prediction

Using GCP and a Random Forest Regressor, I built an application that can predict prices of used cars based on a variety of features.

Hybrid Recommender System

With TFIDF and collaborative filtering, I built an application that can recommend movies based on user reviews and movie features.
